Find Schools Offering Degrees in Architecture
Architecture is the art, science and practice of designing and building structures in accordance with the activities and functions to be carried out within that structure. Like painting or music, architecture is a way for us to express ourselves to the world and to fulfill both the practical and expressive requirements of a civilized people. As an architect, you will study the spatial relationships, arrangement and visual rhythm of the components within a structured environment (ie: a building). You will be asked for a sensitive and innovative response to the functional requirements of the building, and to give the building a place within its surrounding physical and social context. When we talk about architecture, usage of the term usually refers only to those designs and structures that are culturally significant and were created by individual architects. Architecture must satisfy its intended uses, must be technically sound, and must convey aesthetic meaning. But the best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They end up not only as beautiful works of art, but as accomplishments of architecture that are a witness to the nature of the people and culture that produced them. These accomplishments are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art. If you have an interest in how great buildings were made, in famous builders and designers, and how our building design has evolved throughout history, you might be the perfect candidate for a degree in architecture. With an Architecture Degree you will learn how to prepare drawings, plans, specifications and other construction documentation. You will be responsible for using these documents while overseeing the construction of a building, observing the progress of the work, and processing changes and payments. You will be able to provide design services related to planning, programming, interior design and post construction activities. As the primary design professional on a project, you will assume professional responsibility for coordinating all of the design decisions in the project. Accounting | Animation
