Government and Non-Profit
Accounting Courses/Degrees/Classes
Accountants in government and non-profit organizations often face different
challenges from their peers in corporate settings. Government service
offers substantial security and longevity. If, on the other hand, you
want to work for an agency that represents your social or political commitments,
non-profit accounting can be a highly rewarding field.
The work for government and non-profit organizations may resemble many
traditional accounting tasks in private sector employment, but the rules
and unique demands of those professions mean you'll need special training
through a direct accounting degree or qualifying coursework in government
and non-profits.
What's So Special About Government and Non-Profit Accounting?
To engage in non-profit organizational accounting, you'll need classes
that different non-profit budgeting from private corporate models. You
can enroll in accounting courses offered at the undergraduate and graduate
levels with specializations in governmental and non-profit accounting.
Revenue sources, including grants and gifting, comprise a huge component
in non-profit operations. There are strict federal requirements unique
to non-profits that do not resemble commercial organizational reporting.
You may have to take other classes so you can assist non-profit organizations
with capital projects and investments -- all of which have their own distinct
regulations.
Government accounting courses concentrate on the necessary skill sets
to work for federal, state, or local agencies that fall under tax and
revenue jurisdictions across the board. If you intend to work for the
Internal Revenue Service, Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,
or other revenue agencies, you'll need to take direct coursework in regulatory
accounting. Most governmental agencies favor candidates with Certified
Public Accountant licenses.
