Masters of Arts in Teaching

The market for primary, secondary and special needs teachers is expected to grow approximately 19% from 2002 to 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook handbook. Every state has licensing and certification rules around becoming a teacher and many of the Masters of Arts in Teaching programs give those of you with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education the opportunity to obtain the necessary certification to teach. For existing teachers who already have their education degree and license, there are MAT programs that will help you enhance your skills and become more effective educators.

Professional Development

Nationwide there is an increasing urgency to improve the standards of education. The Masters of Arts in Teaching program helps educators develop the skills to foster a true enthusiasm for learning in their middle school and high school students. In the MAT programs, teachers are focused upon as professionals in their field and their skills as teachers and leaders are more effectively developed. You will learn to recognize the role of language in the development of thinking and will be challenged to rethink your assumptions about education and teaching.

A More Rewarding Career
The MAT courses are based on practical research. During your program you will work closely with faculty and MAT teachers to make the connections between educational studies and the actual work of teaching. The MAT program will help you develop the reflective skills critical to teaching effectively and growing as a professional, ultimately making your career even more rewarding.
