What Makes a Good
Auto Mechanic?
Considering a career as an automotive mechanic? Then it helps to know
exactly what makes a good auto mechanic before you make that commitment.
It takes more than just a love of cars. In fact, this career field demands
knowledge, ability, and persistence.
Knowledge
The first characteristic that makes a good auto mechanic is knowledge.
The complexity of today's automobile is evident in the engine, systems,
and various components. A good auto mechanic has a keen awareness of each
of these individual parts and how they work together as a whole. As this
is a day of specialists, a good auto mechanic also has a specialized knowledge
of a particular engine area, such as electrical systems, engine repair,
brake systems, suspension and steering, and heating and air-conditioning.
As you embark on your training, it's a good idea to select a specific
area of auto repair that most interests you and learn everything you can
about your particular area.
Ability
Knowledge is only one part of the equation. What makes a good auto mechanic
is how he or she transfers that knowledge from the training room into
real world repair work. Ability is developed by spending a great deal
of time in hands-on training. As you prepare for your automotive career,
you will benefit from logging time and experience in a high tech repair
facility. Watch a veteran mentor and learn everything you can as that
person works. Your success will be determined by your results. And if
you can find and fix problems, you have the chance to make a good auto
mechanic.
Persistence
Finally, persistence also helps to make a good auto mechanic. The simple
fact is that you're not always going to find and fix the repair the very
first time you try. A problem could be caused by one of several different
factors. A good auto mechanic has the patience and persistence to try
several different fixes before the right one emerges.
